The history of Lux ad Mosam begins in Leiden, where the first Christian student association was founded in 1886. The aim was to create a place where students can develop and orient themselves; not only in their own field of study, but in a wide range of areas. The relationship between faith – the starting point of thought – and numerous social, scientific and cultural subjects were explored. The creation of a deep friendly bond between the members, in which faith was the foundation, stood at its core.
On 14 April 2010, the Christian student association Lux ad Mosam was created from a merger between MSV Navigators and c.s.v. Ichthus Maastricht. These two associations, although they had some differences in character, saw their vision becoming more and more the same and decided to continue together. After a merger process, the final step was taken in the spring of 2010 and the most beautiful student association in Maastricht was created. The vision is very similar to that first association in Leiden. It wants to be an open and welcoming place where members can develop in their faith and as a person, but where they – above all – can enjoy their days as a student to the fullest.
The Association seems young, but has roots going back to 1985, when Ichthus Maastricht was founded. The slightly younger Maastricht Student Association Navigators was founded on 25 March 1998. This historical origin is of course highly valued and honoured, and the history of both associations continues in Lux ad Mosam.
The joint activities of the student association took place during the year 2010/2011 in the Petrushofje, a building in the Heer district in Maastricht. Due to a desire for a more central location in the Maastricht city centre and the condition of the aforementioned building, the Association moved to a space in the Waalse Kerk, a historic building dating back to 1732, at the beginning of the academic year 2011/2012. In 2014, Lux ad Mosam moved into its own Sociëteit ‘Pharos’ in the Bogaardenstraat.
